OH, THE INJUSTICE!

I went out for a walk around 9:15 this morning. Again, in situations like this (you know, IKE) I can get a lot of nervous energy that needs spent and I know I won’t be able to go outside much longer.

So, I thought, why not go to St. Arbuck’s for some coffee? And the above sign is what I saw. Sonic is across the street and they advertised lattes but it’s just not the same.

The good news is I’m not stress eating and I’ve walked about 2 1/2 miles in the past 30 hours, so maybe Ike will be good for weight loss?

FUN GAMES TO PLAY WHILE WAITING FOR IKE

I had originally created this list a week or so ago while waiting for Gustav, which went East to Louisiana. So, I tweaked it a little and this is the list, redux.

The top five games to play while waiting for Hurricane Ike are:

5. Writing sentences with words that start with the letters from abbreviations of the computers that are giving us the spaghetti models. i.e. HWRF: His watch ran fast.

4. Finding synonyms for the word, “swath.” “Swath” was apparently before Roget’s time.

3. Wondering aloud what Hawking would say about the Cone of Uncertainty and whether or not Jim Cantore can tell the future… because Cantore showed up in Galveston long before it was in the middle of said Cone of Uncertainty.

2. Crank up the static electric flashlights! If there was another person here, we could actually race and it might be fun.

and the number one game to play while waiting for Hurricane Ike:

With an ode to Carmen Sandiego… Where on the Gulf is Jim Cantore? (and unfortunately, we found him in Galveston last night and he’s still there!)

HURRICANE IKE

This is why I am not evacuating. Much like what happened with Rita, the freeways were clogged today with people who needed to evacuate, and many people who did not. Though the freeways are not as packed as they were three years ago, I still had no desire to go sit in traffic and go 5 mph for hours on end.

This picture was taken around 3:15 PM at Blalock Road and I-10. I was dismissed from work at noon and the freeways were not nearly this busy. Even now, six hours later, the freeway situation has not improved much. We may see contraflow lanes open in a couple of hours, but still, I feel the need to stay put.

I walked over to my neighborhood grocery store and the parking lot was full all the way to the freeway. Either people are staying put, or they are buying supplies so they can cook dinner while they wait in traffic. Either alternative is plausible.

That poor lonely loaf of bread… but it was gone when I went back with Jene’ a couple of hours later.

And of course, the obligatory shot of the bottled water aisle.

What I’m sure will be a more common sight by tomorrow morning:

Right now, the most I expect are some fallen tree limbs, and some loss of electricity. I am as prepared as I can be, and maybe I’ll sneak out for more pics tomorrow.

JAZZ & RAIN

Tonight, it’s raining in Houston, but it’s a gentle rain and not one of those downpours that make me wonder if I’ll be driving through standing water on the way to work.

Gentle rains seem to only come in the winter. In the summer, storms tear through town, dumping inches of rain in a small amount of time or the air is so thick with humidity it might as well be raining.

With my favorite shows on an indefinite hiatus (writer’s strike) there’s a glut of new reality and game shows in their place… and I’m not a big fan of either. There’s not any good sporting events on right now, so I turned to one of my Sirius jazz channels and I’m just chilling, listening to jazz and rain.

This is one of those random brain-fried posts, but at least I have good music to listen to.

THE TEMPS ARE FALLING! THE TEMPS ARE FALLING!

When I left the house this morning, it was 72 degrees and humid. I grabbed my jacket anyway, because the weatherman promised me I’d see some fall weather today.

In Houston, fall means lower humidity, blue skies, and temps below 80.

At 10 AM, the gusts of wind started, and in about an hour, it was in the lower 60’s. Now, it’s 58 degrees, the winds are howling outside, and I have my laptop on my lap to keep warm.

I’m watching football. The Colts keep punting. The Touchdown Monkeys are not pleased.

SUNNY DAY…

When the sky looks like this, you have to go outside, but when the sky looks like this, it’s fall, and I’m paying for going out now by sneezing. It was worth it!

I took my recycling to the center on Wespark, then drove around a bit. I saw a few fun things while I was out, but am not adept at taking pics while driving, and didn’t really see places to stop and take the pics. I did, however, see this during my travels and was able to take a pic during a red light.

I am looking forward to the cooler temps we’re supposed to have on Monday. I hope it helps my allergies. My allergies make me so tired, I’ve been typing things like “wasn’t don’t” for “doesn’t want” and I’m surprised none of those fun phrases have made it to print in my diminished state.

When I got home, I was greeted with the good news that I have jury duty in about three weeks. Joy of joys. 8 AM downtown. Too bad they won’t let me take a camera.

POST 333 – (and oh yeah… lightning)

This is my 333rd post!

Not particularly significant, but we are having quite a storm and I wish I could get a shot of the lightning. I tried uploading a photo I found, but Blogger is having issues this evening. Maybe they got struck by lightning?

Yes, I am one of the people that enjoy standing next to the window or out in the storm… and I’m still alive (and apparently random-tired). Ha! Some years ago, I was at work when a tornado twisted down I-10, and yes, you guessed it, I was by the window watching it rain sideways against the green sky.

I’m fascinated by the weather, in part, because of it’s unpredictability. So powerful, destructive and life-giving, it’s tough for me to believe weather is just a random happening or act, when in fact, when lightning streaks across the sky, I know it’s an act of God.

And now, my random, tired self will now go to bed.

Peace… in the storm.

AN HUMBERTO SUNSET

Tonight, as I was eating a late dinner, I noticed the vertical blinds go pink. As I peeked out, I saw a gorgeous sunset staring back at me, courtesy of Tropical Storm Humberto, which is churning off the coast of Galveston at the moment.

I ventured out with my camera and some of my neighbors saw me, so they came out and I told them to look at the sky and one couple started looking around for good angles to shoot from (very enthusiastically, I might add) and I followed them between the buildings and got some better shots.

As I was taking pictures, the daughter of another neighbor (early 20’s whom I’ve already met) came out and we talked as I took more pictures.

Then the colors faded quickly.

I turned to thank the neighbor couple and introduce myself, but they were already gone. I’ll have to catch them next time.

Humberto is going to go east, so we are not going to get much of the rain/flooding, for which I am grateful. The ground is saturated and we got a significant rainfall already this morning. Hopefully those who will get Humberto’s rain actually need it.

And now, it’s dark outside…

HAIL HURTS!

Foolishly, I thought I could beat the storm home.

I left work about 4:45 as the sky grew dark. I had checked the radar before I left and it appeared I had time. About a mile from work, a gentle rain began to fall. A half mile later, the gentle rain gave way to a violent, driving rain that made it nearly impossible to see.

I managed to make it home, but not without driving through some deep puddles and the lake under the overpass at I-10. My biggest decision on the way home was, “stop and get the mail or not?”

I did. I took off my shoes and ran in and got the mail. I was very wet by the time I pulled up to the curb at the house. I got out of the car, shielding the door with my umbrella. My umbrella got caught in the door and my head was exposed to the rain.

Thump. Something small and hard hit my head.

Ouch! What was that?

Tink. Something small and hard hit the car. Tink. Tink.

Thump. Thump.

Hail. Perfect.

Ouch!

The good news is that Wynne Dory (the car) was not dented, and apparently, neither was my head. A half hour later, the heavenly faucet tapered off and birds are chirping happily now.

The best part of all this is…

IT’S FOURTEEN DAYS UNTIL MY VACATION!! Still having trouble getting excited…not!

BRR… AND BRR…

Last night it got down to freezing or below freezing for the first time this year… and really this is the first sign of “winter” we’ve had all season. I will not whine, though, most of the northeast is buried under a foot or more of snow, so I consider myself fortunate to just be cold. I’m loving the coffee this morning.

I forgot to cover my fern last night and have not checked on it. I doubt it was freezing or below for more than two or three hours, but I should at least go check and see how Ferny is doing.

The heater actually kicked on several times last night, so the upstairs is significantly warmer than downstairs. The only downside of this is the dry skin and nosebleeds I’ve been experiencing this morning.

Now I’m watching qualifying for the Daytona 500, which I am really excited about. I love racing. Anyone who could get 90mph out of a 1979 Chevy Chevette with year-round snow tires on it should love racing. My goal is to get to a race by 2008, which gives me plenty of time to figure out how to pay for it and decide which race I want to attend.

SHINGLES UPDATE:
And, a little update on the shingles episode… I feel much better, but the fatigue still clings to me and I’m doing all I can to overcome that. The itching is gone (thank goodness), but I’m still dealing with the lethargy and the mental confusion (i.e. “blondness”) so, keep praying for me, if you are so inclined.

Back to qualifying…
